Living in our duplex means that I can’t go wild with my gardens anymore. In my previous home, I turned our dog run into my fenced in garden and I had veggies & herbs growing out my ears. It was beautiful. And I enjoyed spending time out there every chance I got. I can remember harvesting buckets upon buckets of tomatoes and peppers. These days, I’m confined to a small space and I can’t exactly tear up our yard to put in a garden. womp womp But to keep my gardening spirits alive, I decided to build a pallet garden last year. This one leans up against the fence, but you could easily lay this down on the ground and have a “raised” pallet garden.
I originally created this pallet garden tutorial for the World Market Blog. You can head over here to see the step by step process on how to build this pallet garden.
I also show you step-by-step on how to build your own pallet in this post on my blog. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you build your own pallet out of cedar and not treated lumber OR a pallet you found off of Craigslist. Most of the pallets that you see available have been pre-treated with harmful chemicals to keep the pallets lasting for forever. You DO NOT want those chemicals leaching into your plant soil and contaminating your food.
Vertical Pallet Garden Tips
1 // You will want to keep the pallet on the ground for 1-2 weeks to allow the plants to take root before standing it upright.
2 // When you water your garden, water from the top and each subsequent layer, water a little bit less…remember the water will eventually make it’s way down, so your bottom most plants will get a lot of water.
3 // Choose veggies that like a big drink of water and are okay with a small drink of water. I would put my tomatoes and peppers at the bottom the next time I do this garden again, and some of my other veggies, like my lettuces, up towards the top.
4 // After I stood my pallet up, I planted some flowers in the opening at the very top of my pallet that would attract the pollinators to my veggie garden.
Would you try pallet gardening??
